What is Census ??

According to Wikipedia, “Census is a procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the numbers of a given population”. Here the term Census is used mostly in connection with national population and housing census. According to the site of the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India

“Population census is the total process of collecting, compiling, analyzing or otherwise disseminating demographic, economic and social data pertaining, at a specific time, of all persons in a country or a well-defined part of a country. As such, the census provides snapshot of the country’s population and housing at a given point of time”.

In other words, census is a process to find out the approximate data of population based on the demographic, economic and social situation so that the govt can make welfare schemes and different sort of budgets.

In India,

1st census held in the year 1872, while the 1st regular census held in the year 1881. In 2011, India held the 15th census in its history and 16th will be in 2021. The motto of the 2011 Census is Our Census Our Future. Here, some important points of census 2011 has been mentioned:-

  • Population of India: 121 crore (1210193422)
  • % of world population: 17.5%
  • Number of Districts: 640 (six hundred forty)
  • Total Number of Cities/Towns: 7,936(seven thousand nine hundred thirty six)

  • Sex ratio in India: 940/1,000 (nine hundred forty females per thousand males)
  • Literacy rate in India:
    • Overall: 74.04%
      • Male: 82.14%
      • Female: 65.46%
